Is it about time we retired the "start with le greeks" meme? Fact: modern men are smarter and more knowledgable than a bunch of barely sentient savages 2500 years ago ever were Fact: digital technology and Internet gave a skyrockering boost to the rates of education Fact: average highschooler these days is smarter than Plato and Socrates combined
Stop worshipping ancient fools who couldn't invent toilet paper to wipe their pederast asses.

On the contrary, I cannot believe people actually read Nietzsche without first starting with the Greeks.
que a hundred undergrads angrily replying to this post because they jumped into zarathustra in high school without any philosophical context and desperately wish to believe they understood it

This is a typical response that you would expect from an ignorant sophomore.
Yes, we now now a lot more and yes they were wrong on many isues. That's not the point you fool. Their methodologies, their philosophical vocabulary/concepts, the issues they discussed, in short their whole approach to epistemological, metaphysical and ontological questions shaped western thought for centuries - and still do.
So no we don't start with the Greeks to blindly follow their explanations, but because you cannot understand western thought without this intellectual legacy.

>muh historical importance I can drive a car just fine without learning how to drive a carriage. To claim that you can't understand muh West without the greeks is outright retarded, greeks were by and large lost to the western world until renaissance, and the world carried on just fine. Nobody cares about greek epistemology or their childish cosmological ideas too. Move on, life's too short to pay a tribute to some cunts.

>false analogies >'muh greentext' If only you read the Greeks you'd be able to form a valid coherent argument.

>he thinks reading the greeks is a meme stop making threads and go read the greeks
Gabriel Carter
OP's a retarded shitposter. That being said, given that Western education is predicated heavily on the core intellectual concepts of the greater Greek historians and philosophers, it seems unnecessary to start at square one for the majority of texts. While a reader may miss blatant references to the Greeks, they are unlikely to strongly misinterpret or otherwise fail to understand the meaning behind most works of Western Canon provided they have even a highschool education.
Noah Bennett
You're wasting your time. I'm not disagreeing with you, but asking these people to admit just how useless and irrelevant greek philosophy is would be asking them to admit that the one thing they can take solace in and be proud of in their otherwise empty and unhappy lives, is a giant masturbatory waste of time. Let them play pretend philosophy has bettered them.

Hmm, you sure seem to know a lot about the nature of intelligence. If that's the case then you shouldn't have any problem describing it for us, would you?
