It doesn't have much to do with Hegel. The benefit is that the reader is permitted to draw his own conclusions, engage with the text without being dominated by system. Indirect communication may be inconclusive but that does not make it less true

That's not an answer, its deferral. I'm speaking about philosophy and his contribution to it as a whole, not how the individual interacts with it.

I'm having trouble understanding this post. I think Kierkegaard does offer an "answer" of sorts but maybe you disagree. Who would you say is a more satisfying philosopher in that respect?

Have you even read Soren like at all? I read excerpts from his Journals and the first bit of Either/Or, had to return it to the library but from the wiki page, his philosophizing was in direct response TO HEGEL so it has very much to do with him.

Hegel worked to reconcile reason and faith, which soren was pretty "sore" about because if on one hand you acknowledge that man by the will of god has a flawed and incomplete knowledge, why would you even bother to understand anything via reason, enter faith.

This "faith" amounts to nothing more than a deferral of an answer, substituting it for a "eventually we'll get to the end of it". Which is satisfying to existential philosopher types like you and I because it presents a meta-answer of answerlessness. Which keeps people occupied for a little while but without "faith" the whole things falls apart.

The whole of his published work is essentially dialectical, he invents characters whos dynamic dialogue presents the questions, a back and forth to eternity.

You are right that he is responding to Hegel but (and this is somewhat heterodox) I think he is more directly dealing with Schopenhauer's rationalistic pessimissm. At any rate my point is Kierkegaard responds to Hegel's systematic/authoritative style with a conversation between pseudonyms. Regarding your dissatisfaction with Kierkegaard's philosophy because of the centrality of faith, that's fine as far as at goes, but amounts I think to a garden variety kind of modern skepticism (however I have no way of knowing this). Faith is not a fact. You're saying you respond to existentialism, so I have to ask do you think any other existentialist provides an ultimately satisfactory answer?

They're translated by Hong and split up into volumes alphabetized by topic. Volume 4 or 6 is autobiographical I can't remember.
