I have been a terrible math student my entire life. I am interested in education and improving myself but, I always felt like I was either just too stupid for math or I have some sort of learning disability.
I was able to start a successful career in computer networking without a degree but, almost 20 years in my career has plateaued. I don't want to go into mgmt and my technical skills have gotten stale. I decided that instead of chasing more certifications, I would return to school and finish my degree. I have taken and passed all of the courses that have college algebra as a pre-req but I have avoided algebra itself because it has always been so painful/embarrassing/humiliating for me. But, to complete my degree, I need to check those boxes. Last semester I got an A in developmental math, which felt good but was tempered by the fact this it was developmental math... grade school stuff. But, doing so well opened up an opportunity to take an accelerated algebra class that jams intro, intermediate and college algebra all into one semester. Perfect. Let's get this all out of the way!
So, 3 weeks in we are beginning slope intercepts and... is this fun? Am I having fun doing math? Holy shit... I am!
So, no point in this post other than to share that I am really happy with math right now and I NEVER thought that would happen :)
I am done with it until I complete my degree but, I an seriously considering my math studies when I can. I want to understand aerodynamics and I know I need to go a bit farther in math before I can give it a shot.

To be quite fair, high school math is probably the most tedious shit ever. "Advanced"- so to speak- math is much, much for fun. If you're really interested, try to learn a bit about abstract/modern algebra. It is a generalization of what you'd learn in high school algebra, and proves many interesting things.
Nicholas Sanchez
Good shit OP. People like you are an inspiration for many.
Ian Davis
Good stuff man. I fucking hated highschool math until we got to differentiation pretty much. Then stuff started to click. I did alright and somehow got into engineering school and every passing term I enjoy the math more and more. It's like they can't be arsed with no-aptitude idiots in school so they teach you caveman ways of solving equations and then you get to linear algebra and it looks like building a wheel from leaves or some shit. On that note I absolutely despised the geometry stuff. I feel pretty confident about it now but I never once came across someone who could make it intuitive for a teenager. Godspeed OP

Shame you didn't discover the Joy of Math earlier. Try reading some books by Ian Stewart. "From Here to Infinity", "Flatterland", practically anything he's written. Other recommended authors Alex Bellos and Martin Gardner. All enjoyable as well as instructive.
Adrian Long
Fantastic post, OP.
You either like Math or you haven't gotten to the fun part yet!
Easton Flores
The same thing happened to me. I'm high school I completely fucking hated math class, but once I got to calculus everything clicked and I started having fun with it.
I guess high school math teachers just blow dick in general.

I'm in a similar situation. Didn't give much of a shit about it when I was younger, but now I'm having a blast with trigonometry. Bit pissed with myself that I didn't take it seriously enough back then, because I've got quite a bit to cover.

Why do you pay the professional physicist who isn't nearly as good at physics as I am but you don't pay me for it?
Why did you try to go make me be the low ranking office bitch in stupid computer guy job where my boss was always a fucking woman even though the IT field is in >le no women in STEM meme?
Fuck you. Pray for the remnant that still survives.
Adrian Watson
You should learn about pascal's triangle, user. It has lots of interesting and above all USEFUL patterns.
Asher Stewart
this post is literally a pasta that is at the top of reddits r/math right now.
this is funnier at the fact that most posts ITT are saying how good it is. Proof Veeky Forums is literally a bunch of redditors in denial.
OP is a faggot and so are all of you
Connor Anderson
ex-redditor here, can confirm.

I love hearing about other people who have fun with math.
Personally, I love trig functions and logarithms; even if they're not challenging they're so much fun to work with. I remember that when I was a kid I screwed around with logarithms, calculus, and e so much that I accidentally derived what I later learned was Euler's formula.
Good times.

Newfag detected, lurk more.

Dawg, I'm sorry to say, but you are the newfag here -- at least on sci. But yeah that guy is an insufferable fag and he does it every thread.

>insufferable fag Why the fagversion?

In the same boat here; restarting my math education. Cheers OP!!

what's the theorem in that pic ? """"eyeball theorem""""
Andrew Nguyen
>college algebra So this is actually middle school algebra, right? Don't they teach that really advanced form of algebra in actual college courses? I'm not quite sure how to distinguish the two.
Michael Scott
why do these arabs have vaginas floating above their heads? how did they master tissue engineering and antigravity? is this how they built the pyramids?
Eli Garcia
Did u not get enough attention off ur reddit post faggot
Josiah Gomez
Yeah, I took 'college algebra' and it was the same stuff I was supposed to learn in high school.
