I've been reading Kip Thorne (recent Nobel winner for LIGO.) He studied under Wheeler and his own grad students have gone on to become top-notchers. Same with Feynman, Hawking, etc.

Results are what matter. If you become famous, that's nice, but having a smooth line of patter on-camera isn't the goal.
Someone on Veeky Forums asked recently if MIchio Kaku is the smartest man alive. Doubtful. I don't know precisely what his field of expertise is, but I can't recall any physics papers citing his work. (Which doesn't mean there aren't any and I am NOT implying he's superficial or incompetent.) But he's famous because he's interviewed a lot (famous because he's ALREADY famous) and he writes popSci books.

The nature of media has changed we don't need people like that anymore. Technology is becoming all-consuming and sucking in more and more money every day, it already directs every facet of our existence. That and the era of the individual scientist is over, everything is group-research based now.
