JRR Tolkien was first and foremost an academic of old English and Scandinavian linguistics and literature, so I think the translation should be decent.

His translation is widely recognized as garbage. It was the only scholarly translation available for a long time though.

What another good scholarly translation? I really liked his style although I'd love to read it again from a different point of view.

Heaney
Heaney is unquestionably the best translation. I don't even know if there are other notable translations of Beowulf in English.

You should read his lectures and elucidations on Beowulf, but I think the translation you posted is superior.

Tolkien didn't release it because he himself despised it. Heaney's translation is the gold standard for a reason. Academia uses it, casual readers use it, there's a reason.
