How does this make you feel?

This will go down as one of the most influential books of our time.

I don't have any strong feelings about it because that would be silly.

No it won't, it will be forgotten in a couple of years

I don't read much poetry beyond what is required in school. Can someone explain how her poetry isn't just writing something and then pressing enter at random times

It doesn't bother me that there are idiots out there. There always have been.

I don't think it will, it's a flavour-of-the-month book for literature hipsters who don't really know much about literature. It's the sort of book I'd expect to see on unironically on the shelf of someone who browses /mu/ and pitchfork.

This book sits in the Classics section of my local bookshop already.

It won't go down in history simply because all its ideas rest on the surface. Nothing in this book requires digestion, which is how it manages to be best-selling POETRY. That never happens and is a testament to its accessibility, which itself is a testament to its superficiality. There is no conversation with the ideas in this book besides the ones teenagers and young adults have already had with themselves. For that reason it has about as much a chance of going down in history as the average /lif/izen's love poems do. The only thing about it worth talking about from a critical perspective is the question of how someone so talentless was able to manipulate social media into spreading the infestation of mediocre poetry

Makes me feel powerful and liberated.

Fuck white people.

hey

wow

rude

I know a literature PhD specialising in Sylvia Plath who praises this shit and who otherwise only seems to discuss shitty pop feminist shit

In the halls of the abandoned library,

I don't care about it. I'm not emotionally invested in it.

>This will go down as one of the most influential books of our time
It won't

Doesn't make me feel much. If anyone from here "makes it" I'll be happy for them but I don't expect their stuff to be much better than hers. The zeitgeist is to blame, not her.

lol

yo who gives a fuck about so wanger and an inbred hick shitting out tomes for old people. Cry some more, grandpa.

Her poetry pretends to be concise and clear for blunt emotional affect, but it's actually just lazy false profundities arranged in the most simplistic and uninteresting poetic form possible.

It's like taking a black and white photo of a flower.

My girlfriend knows her because all Sikhs know each other. I nonetheless remain more interested in what Shell Silverstien has contributed to poetry than in what she has offered.

Influential != good

Doesnt it make you rage that she writes cliches and that shes successfull despite/because of it?
I feel envy because maybe i could write shit, but i would be too embarrased to do it

makes me thing of Blake turning in his grave.

That's a good one. She unfairly gets shit on by Veeky Forums because she is popular.

This brings up an interesting question.

Do you think Rupi Kaur is well-aware of her lack of ability as a writer, but has very shrewdly observed the current state of politics (namely feminism and identity politics pertaining to ethnic minorities) and social media (primarily Instagram and Tumblr) and the vapid, status-obsessed culture that exists on them - meaning people that are more interested in uploading photos of pages from books they're reading, rather than actually reading for its own sake. I've seen them co-opt Vonnegut, Murakami and now Rupi Kaur's work, flaunting their awareness of these authors in the same fashion as they flaunt the latest fashion trend initiated by Kylie Jenner - and then pandered accordingly until she reached her current level of success?

Basically I'm asking whether you think Rupi cynically took note of the current zeitgeist, particularly the two phenomena of feminism and social media, and calculatingly merged them together in her work to ensure she became a hit? Or is her work a genuine expression of who she is?

showcasing their awareness of these authors in the exact same manner that they flaunt the latest fashion trend initiated by Kylie Jenner*

I thought that this book was another example of Veeky Forums autists sperging out on some non-sensical shit, but boy was I wrong. It was displayed as a featured book at my local used bookstore. And according to the cashier, it is a pretty popular book.

what can we expect of this society if our "intellectually-inclined" population reads this trash?

>our "intellectually-inclined" population
not a thing

I could never write her stuff. I'm sure it would embarrass me the same as you, but it'd never occur to me in the first place to write how she does.

>feeling
I don't do that anymore.

Do you go to university?

30% amazing and creative poems
50% feminist trash
10% BS

...

What makes her stuff so popular? I still don't get it.

Doesn't make me feel anything.

Twighlight will as well. So will Forty Shades. And don't forget - Harry Potter.

Who gives a shit? Her support base consists of ignorant, petty bourgeoisie and apathetic, money-worshiping capitalists.

What's the other 10%? Illustrations?

Congratulations.

You're deluded.

Welcome to the prison of your own making.

Sincerely,

Your Betters

what a slut

she also hates seeing her friends succeed apparently

This is satire level humor.

This is just shitty tumblr level writing and concept though?

yup. if you want an explanation as to why people like it. She's an 'instapoet' so her 'poems' are short, easy, and gay as fuck so they can get the most likes.

...

If it's genuine self-expression why aren't the other instapoets as famous as her? Think: n a y y i r a h w a h e e d

stop fucking making it viral then

has to be bait... r-right?

You're at least as good a poet as Kauer. Go get published.

So are these quotes from nazis or the lyrics to meme-songs? It's always one or the other in these threads.

How will we kill the white males?
These evil bigots!

Are so bad!
