Emerald tablets of Thoth

My friend was a religion major at an Ivy League school, she mostly used the NRSV for research.

>tfw you will never be a ripped rooster with serpent legs whipping sexy hoes in the backyard

NRSV is the most used in academia

Catholics liked the older RSV

Why are there so many in the first place?

We were talking about this in the Torah/Pentateuch thread. If you are serious scholar, you read ancient Hebrew/Greek as well as some of the more obscure forgotten languages. But if you a literary scholar, it sounds like the annotated Oxford Bible is a good place to start. KJV is always pretty good too, considering is relatively accurates and it tries to preserve some the Bible's poetry and melodic patterns

>my church is the one true church that preaches the true, divinely inspired word of god
>no, mine is

this is your brain on theism

KJV is where it all went wrong. Idiots making bad translations in order to fit their opinions. For example, Leviticus 20:13.

>the most used in academia

And this is the least persuasive argument among intelligent people

>a religion major
Ok, I guess that's better than nothing, but she would be much more credible if she could claim to be a student of Christian theology and to have knowledge of both Hebrew and Greek

Why do I suspect that you have never studied even one controversy over a point of doctrine

No, she's an atheist who majored in religious studies, not a degenerate (((christ))) cuck.

>not reading the Joseph Smith translation

The original greek texts

>protestant bibles
>complete dog shit

pick two fambly

>the most used version by people who study the original sources
>"pssh, I'm too intelligent for that"

I see you making no arguments, so what does that say about you?

It is the culmination of modern Biblical scholarship post-Dead Sea Scrolls, and when you are the Bible of choice for the Princeton Seminary and Yale Divinity, that carries weight

holee modda o' Da Boss Above

Yo Yea, though ah walk through da valley o' da shadow o' deaf, ah will fear nahh evil: fo' thou art wif me; thy rod an' thy staff dey comfort me what 'chew trippin foo'

NRSV?

Maybe the Anchor Bible. Of the translations listed there, idk, maybe the NASB.

>atheist who majored in religious studies
why would you spend all of your time studying something you don't believe

>>protestant bibles
The story doesn't change fammy

you don't have to be a rapist to be a criminal psychologist

From Da Pidgin Bible

Da Boss Above, he take care me,
Jalike da sheep farma take care his sheeps.
He goin give me everyting I need.

He let me lie down wea da sweet an soft grass stay.
He lead me by da water wea I can rest.

He give me new kine life.
He lead me in da road dat stay right,
Cuz I his guy.

A Bible with no annotations and instead having separate secondary sources from more reputable and in depth scholasticism.

>Cuz I his guy
This line really sets it off for me.

If I want to read the bible to better understand references in other works, should I read the KJV bible or go with a more literal one like the NRSV?

the number of books does famalam

I got my BA in Hebrew Bible

For the Hebrew Bible, New Oxford Annotated is great. KJV really preserves the syntax and gives a good impression of the tone and such

New Revised Standard Version

the one that nobody ever quoted obviously

...

The Brick Testament

>One time wen Jesus wen stay wit his guys, he tell dem, “No go way from Jerusalem, but wait ova hea till you guys get da Spirit my Fadda wen promise fo send. You guys wen hear me tell bout dat Spirit

Douay-Rheims

>this is what happens when dumb people try to pretend they are smart

Go take a nap.

1. there are non-theistic religions

2. You don't have to subscribe to any religion to appreciate the facet of human experience that is encountering the great existential mysterium and subsequently human en devours to try to grapple and make sense of that.

3. religion is a fascinating human phenomena, religious studies is an interesting combination of history, language, sociology/anthropology, philosophy, literature, etc.
