his death was very sincere and uncynical in some ways. it was rude, but it wasn't unkind in intent.

I agree his suicide was the only sincere moment in his life.

I knew a guy who shot himself in the chest with birdshot. I'm not sure if he just wanted to leave less of a mess for when his parents found him or if he was just an idiot, but it took him a while to die.

Hanging is a pretty shitty way to go. Considering it was a patio rafter, I'm sure DFW suffered. It's weird though that he bound his wrists with tape, probably to prevent himself from clawing at the ligature. You also tend to piss/shit yourself.
