Although the feelings are being put in a juvenile manner, I find myself in the same situation. I'm 18, headed off to college, and don't know what I want to pursue beyond literature and philosophy. It's a top 15 school, so pretty good, but not incredible. But again, I don't know what I could do with a B.A. in English and/or Philosophy. Alternatively, I don't know what else to pursue. Computer science? It seems like the most pragmatic route, but I fear I'm just following the fray into a "safe" option that will leave me ultimately unfulfilled. It all feels pretty hopeless tbqh. Any advice?

Take a few years off and go travel or at least move to a different city than the place you were born in and work a little bit first. It gives you a perspective on life. For example, there are literally thousands of shitty low skill low pay jobs that need to be done by society, and if you don't have the right connections and credentials that could easily become your entire life.

I'm 20, entering a top 20 school this fall, with my life already figured out. My hope is to network like a motherfucker, publish some writing, pick up a bit of Chinese, and hopefully get bankrolled as a political shill for the glorious peoples republic of China while I'm in school. I'll then travel Asia/the Arabian Gulf a bit (maybe teach English, I've heard of people earning 8k/month as live in tutors in Abu Dhabi, which is chump change for some those places) till I can find a sweatshop I can buy cheap electronics and ship them to my home country for huge markups. Once I've built up a decent financial backing, speak a few languages, published some writing, and networked somewhat within political circles, I'll run for office. I've already got a list of hyper populist reforms to enact and a vision of how I'll cultivate my cult of personality. Many people who study philosophy in undergrad go on to law school or continue in academia. They tend to score higher on the GRE, likely other standardized tests as well. Most of the senior people at my organization (fin services industry) studied the humanities, and a few did philosophy. The humanities have more cachet than your average muh practical wagecuck above a certain level. Unless you've a PhD in astrophysics or something quants don't have much prestige.

From someone who went through it as soon as he left, trust that your interest in philosophy is a phase. Take advantage of it by reading as much as possible this summer. Within three months your interests will change. You're just curious about life and the world right now.

Don't fuck yourself over by studying the liberal arts in college. Switch your major as soon as you can. You don't want to end up working a minimum wage job while shilling esoteric literature on an anime board in your spare time like 75% of these guys. Take this time to answer some of your biggest questions as well as to figure out what practical skill interests you and pursue that instead.
