If we exclude Greek tragedians as poets (Aeschylus, Euripides and Sophocles) and remove your stupid "four best" restriction then:

Homer, Virgil, Dante, Camoes, Chaucer, Shakespeare, Vondel, Goethe, Milton, Holderlin, Yeats, Frost, Crane

Most people aren't going to be familiar with the best known in all the foreign languages (Persian, Chinese etc).

English:
>Drama - Shakespeare (obv.)
>Epic - Milton (obv.)
>Lyric - Keats (some may disagree, but highly regarded by other poets)
>Bonus: Gray (largely known for his elegy)

Sappho
John Donne
Rilke
Wallace Stevens

Best list here so far, but one too many Anglos.

Swap out Baudelaire for Donne (he's not even the best English poet)

wow I bet you sit down to pee

I can't pee at urinals becuz I'm pee shy

Pls don't make fun of me user :(

no it's ok I prefer stalls because of privacy but I can go to a urinal if I have to
I was just making fun of you because of having Sappho on your list.

>and ignore the other arbitrary rule

Shakespeare

I'm all for the Anglocentric bias here. I'd have guessed this type of thread would be full of pseuds pretending they think obscure medieval Belgian poetry is wonderful. Well done Veeky Forums.

Yes he is; or rather, Flowers of Evil is the best book of poetry to come from France.

Anybody familiar with Persian poetry? I've read its very comparable with English poetry

Dante
Petrarch
Ariosto
Pound

"Poetry is for queerboys."
-Voggenut

I'm queer. I'm gay. I'm homosexual. I'm a poof, I'm a poofter, I'm a ponce. I'm a bumboy, battyboy, backside artist, bugger. I'm bent. I am that arsebandit. I lift those shirts. I'm a faggot-ass, fudge-packing, shit-stabbing uphill gardener. I dine at the downstairs restaurant; I dance at the other end of the ballroom. I'm Moses and the parting of the red cheeks. I fuck and I’m fucked. I suck and I’m sucked. I rim them and wank them, and every single man's had the fucking time of his life.

More like CIGay.

not counting the ancients

>Goethe
>Shakespeare
>Pushkin
>Heine

This is pretty much it, subbing Shakespeare for Yeats of course. These threads are only interesting, however, when one allows one's love or one's personal choices to get in the way. Virgil over Homer because we know the former was an individual poet in the modern sense. The poetry of 'Homer' is however superior.

Excluding ancients whose poetry is the fabric of all later creation (ie Homer, Virgil, n them):

Longfellow, Yeats, Dylan Thomas, Killer Mike

Bertolt Brecht
Shakespeare
Pablo Neruda
Dante Alighieri
Homer was a poet. His poetry just isn't always translated to English in that way.

Me in my early period
Dante
Me in my late period
Shakespeare

I can agree for the "best book" (as a concept, not just as a collection of neat poems), however Victor Hugo is so superior as a poet it's not even fair to compare them.

Is this a joke?
