Spice Thread

A thread for the discussion of spices.

What spices are your favorite/can't you live without?

What spices do you hate/think are overrated?

Which spices do you wanna try?

Just bought some mace, grains of paradise, and long pepper. Bretty excited to try them out

Long pepper sucks

...

Sage, ginger, cumin, and chipotle powder are some of my favorites. I use chipotle in barbecue and other dishes that need the heat and benefit from being smoked. Turmeric, ginger, garlic, and red pepper flakes are the only spices I put in my fried rice.

The spice must flow.

Oooo long pepper, I've seen it but never tried it, what's it like?

>What spices are your favorite/can't you live without?
cumin, smoked paprika and probably star anise if it counts.

>What spices do you hate/think are overrated?
Chinese 5 spice is overrated. Sumac is nice but overrated as well.

>Which spices do you wanna try?

I'm not sure, I've tried a lot. Probably something I've never heard of.

>sumac is overrated
Where the fuck do you live? Are you sure you didn't mean saffron?

Fresh vanilla bean is fantastic and I encourage everyone here to make panna cotta with it.

I can't live without paprika, smoked or raw.

I don't know what the big deal with Tumeric is. It's kind of mediocre.

>likes star anise
>hates five-spice
thinking dot png

>what do you mean you like wheat but not beef wellington

>What spices are your favorite/can't you live without?

PHS
Cumin
Black Pepper
Hungarian Wax Pepper
Garlic

Europe, and no I meant sumac. It's nice but it seems to have taken off lately.

I like the warmth from star anise that I feel is missing in five spice. I can use star anise in everything from carrot cake to curry, the same isn't true of five spice.

anyone have that one mixed spice/season mix they can't let go of?
I as get more into cooking I've pretty much never bough season packet etc. But this one I've had incorporated into meals since childhood so its the one I keep.

>tfw live in baltimore and old bay is poured on every fucking thing

Why?
What makes this special?
>PHS
??
Szged Hungarian Seasoning is the only blend I truly and honestly love

I'm not sure, will report back when I get it.

>>What spices are your favorite/can't you live without?
black pepper (Tellichery), cumin, coriander, cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, celery seed
>What spices do you hate/think are overrated?
chipotle, chili powder, curry
>Which spices do you wanna try?
anise, allspice

paprika is so subtle it's almost a waste of money

...

>What spices are your favorite/can't you live without?
Chili powder (Chile del arbol), Garlic powder, black pepper, cilantro, and sesame and not a spice but lemon zest.
>What spices do you hate/think are overrated?
I hate turmeric.
>Which spices do you wanna try?
idk

oh yeah I forgot one, I love msg.

Thyme is probably the most used herb in my kitchen. For spices, paprika and black pepper. I use a fair amount of garlic powder and I have alot of premixed spice blends.

You're buying shitty paprika

I've got to have my cajun blackening spice blend, so that means cayenne, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black and white pepper, blah blah blah.
