Honestly, I think they're just cheap ass business owners, being petty and sweating the small stuff. What you don't pay in financial cost (not that $16.99ish is dirt cheap), you deal with in frustration.

Making the food you can buy at any fast food joint or restaurant is only cheaper if you buy the ingredients in bulk, but for basically every dish, you don't want to do that unless you have a lot of people you can make it for or you just want to eat that dish a lot in the time frame before the ingredients start to go off. Most people though don't want to eat homemade Big Macs or Whoppers for a week.

many korean restaurants serve water in reusable plastic bottles and that lid type is typical. instead of waiters walking around and doling out water from pitchers, they'll just grab one from a nearby fridge and give it to you. in regular restaurants with group seating, the bottle will be larger (like >1L) and you pour it out into glasses for everyone.
