It is written like that to emulate a dream, where not much makes sense and hidden meanings jump out of the woodwork. It's pretty enjoyable, even if you do not understand every word, and you get bits and pieces of the story alongside vivid images and references as if you were indeed remembering a dream. I have never experienced a similar sensation in literature.
