In Africa oral culture is still really strong, and that is a nice way to learn about yourself (just by listening to your family), but orientalists are great if you want to read actual literature, since the lack of strong, secular, popular written culture doesn't really allow black Africa to produce something that can be as good as what yuros write.

Contemporary writers are forced to use other planets or utterly invented settings, which forfeits the verisimilitude of groundedness that "Darkest Africa" tales exploited. You're on point, OP. Your friend is losing out on a ton of great literature (the height of which is probably Heart of Darkness). Literary tribalism is provincialism of the soul.
