Seriously am I supposed to read this shit? It's exactly what it says, literally a catalogue of people, places and ships

Keep fighting

hah it gets better soon

Was this basically the epic poem version of a stadium band yelling out the hometown that they're playing in during a concert? Did Homer's audience wait for him to call out their ancestral homeland and cheer?

>be Osonius of Tibelus tribe
>hanging with the squad waiting for our copy of the iliad to arrive
>finally gets here
>qt grill i've been courting shows up with her clan
>bythegodsdatbooty.blackfigurevase
>reading through the catalogue of the ships
>fucking Thalpius of Elis gets dropped
>and that dick from Euboea
>waiting for my mighty ships and tribe to get mentioned
>nothing
>qt laughs all the way to Euboea
>mfw

High quality post.

It's like 5 fucking pages retard. Consider that reading might not be for you

kek

why cause I dont want to read 5 pages of names? its also a lot more than 5 pages but whatever.

Doesn't matter anyway, my point was less "do i need to read through this for the sake of it so i can call people on Veeky Forums plebs" and more "do i actually need to know any of these people, or is this just for the historians to study"

It's 12 pages in my edition.
Tbh you don't have to read it. Nobody reads the genealogies from the Bible either. I found it neat to have the well-known heroes given some context, but it is far from an essential section to us.

a tip o' the hat to you, user

>far from essential

None of Homer is essential for brainlet retards like you; might as well give up now.

nice meme

have a (You)

that's a big war

>12 pages
then what the fuck am I reading holy shit? Mine is 150 pages not counting the essay at the start.

Thersites' speech is the most important in the book

How did all these Greek motherfuckers remember their promises to Gods and the prizes they swore to each other? How many Ewes in what state to who, and how many Ewes do I have left anyway...?

ISBN?

That's exactly what it was. In fact certain city states got added over time that were never even there.

Saved!

wow

Iduno its an old book I found in my mom's house.

Are you sure you're not talking about the whole Iliad when you say 150 pages?

The above posts that give 5-12 pages are talking about the specific section of book 2 where Homer lists off all the city states and their leaders present at the siege.

Does anyone else have the penguin edition that deliberately has really ragged, uneven pages?

I didn't realise till it got delivered.

I have the penguin modern classics edition but cant say i've noticed anything. But as i said i'm only at the catalogue of the ships so far

Nah it's deliberately not guillotined to make the book look old fashioned or something, it really pisses me off because it's hard to turn pages

Unfortunately, yes. Fagles' translation is decent so I put up with it but I couldn't tell you how many times pages slipped out of my hands while I was reading. Holding all the jilted fucking pages at once requires zen-master type levels of dexterity that my extensive experience throwing dice just didn't prepare me for.

Hipsters ruin fucking everything

It's fucked
Goodnight translation though

I wish I had this earlier. I was constantly confused by who's fighting who and on what side they were on. Welp theres always a next reading.

> he didn't get past the first two chapters

Work through it, user. It becomes a brutal shitshow of Gods betraying Gods, fighting for honour, in-fighting and extreme violence.

There's a penguin classics version of the same translation without the deckled edges

Calm down

what is the best iliad translation? pope, fitzgerald, fagles?

Its the most patrician book of The Iliad.

Kek.

Lattimore.

...

Ive said it before and I'll say it again
the funeral games are the worst part of the Iliad

>hmm I want to read Iliad and the Odyssey
>fagles translation seems good
>ohh sweet Penguin got this pretty decently priced box-set that includes Aeneid
>and since they all got the same design it'll look swell on my shelf
feelsbadman

It depends on what you mean by best.
Accuracy is Lattimore
Poetry is Pope by a mile
Poetry+Ease of Reading is Fitzgerald
Ease of Reading is Fagles
I'd recommend Fitzgerald for a first time reading, because it's easy but still poetic.
Also here is some quick background
pages.ucsd.edu/~dkjordan/arch/iliad/IliadGuide01.html

>tfw your copy of the Illiad got lost because he's blind

>mfw my set has them all the same
I guess it's the original set when they first brought it out.

this is what you poetry hating fuckers get for not choosing to read Fitzgerald.

Can I be in screen cap pls?

lmao

Why the fuck would you read a translation by this fucking socialist Pope? He managed to cuck Achilles btw.

What about Martin Hammond? He translates the penguin version

No, Fitzgerald

legit takes 2 seconds to skim through

Are you trolling or do you really not know who Alexander Pope is ?

For comedy, you start with the Greeks.

youtube.com/watch?v=aofPdMbXzUQ

well im not going to go out and buy another copy I just want to know what the consensus on his translation was

I just think it's silly that at some point Homer's like "okay ladies stay with me we're almost done"

when does this happen?
