I was scrolling down my facebook (yeah, I'm pondering to delete it) and I got stumbled to this post: "I was thinking and realized that still today, in 2017, we don't learn in schools about african history and culture. And, even though the very little we learn is, still, through an european optic. Because our country almost does not have african descendants, right?"
What do you think? Is there a real disdain and pre concepts about Africa? Please comment.
Is this only for people from the US? In Europe African history is never taught in public school, apart from Colonialism and a few tidbits of contemporary history. No one really cares about it, apparently.

Because we study history through a western perspective. I don't see why this is an issue. If you want to deeply acknowledge the cultures and traditions of Africa, take a specialized course. If you're taking a generalized course on history in a western nation, we can only really gloss over the world outside the west and how it relates to us.
>Silk road brought goods to Europe >Civilization started in the fertile crescent and the expanded north/westward >Europeans colonized most of the known world
And so on. See what I'm saying?
Aaron James
>He still uses facebook in 2017 Even normies are starting to movie away from that, user.
I'm also not sure what that person is on about. In America they basically forcefeed us African American culture and history. February was one of my least favorite months ever since I was a kid because we'd always have to listen to African American's give lectures at our school about their culture. Hell, even the colleges near me have black history classes now. One of the many reasons I'm opting to go to a good university out of the country.
Thomas Mitchell
You are lucky in the US if you were taught anything of Greece, Rome, or the silk road, or you have gone in specifically for that. You are lucky to even know the celtic people existed, minus the popular culture and myth celebrating it. The US education of history is not concerned with our descendants, but to create a pro-liberal framework for understanding history. When Africa is taught it is a moral story about denying a people their freedom. Very few in society care about da kangz n sheit except to pit it for or against this pro-liberal framework that pervades their comprehension of so-called history.
Kevin Howard
There really isn't much history to much of Africa prior to Europeans. There is no African Alexander the Great. Do you want to learn about the Bantu expansion? Because that was a pre-industrial genocide. Doesn't fit well with peaceful Africans.
Asher Baker
Well shoot man I opened this thread to basically say this but you really hit the nail on the head.
Let me add my own cynical comment: Africa has no history or culture worth teaching.
Evan Nelson
OP delete your Facebook account permanently. It only serves to cloud your mind with the bullshit of your consumerist acquaintances. Nothing they have to say or show you actually matters. Spend the time you waste on FB on something actually good for you. Try reading or try staring out the window.
Samuel Ross
Tfw staring out a window is an infinitely better use of time than browsing faebook.
Adrian Adams
That's not true. Things obviously happened in Africa. Empires have existed, conquest occurred (from within and without the African people), cultural groups developed and moved around, etc. and we know much of the history of it. Better to say it's not worth teaching. Although i think it is at least good to know WHAT is happening when the slave market and south africa are discussed. And if Rome is taught you have to pick up something of Roman Africa and Egypt.
Sebastian Mitchell
Why don't they teach kids about that time the Xhosa decided to slaughter all their livestock and destroy their crops because they thought spirits of their ancestors would kill whitey and bring them all the food they needed.
Then they starved to death by the tens of thousands, and the Brits took their land.
Chase Garcia
Why didn't they eat their livestock?
Thomas Flores
Because a sixteen year old girl had a prophetic vision and told them not to because they were unclean.

>im pondering to delete it Lmfao you're a fucking pseud, stopped reading there.
Hunter Jones
This is truly amazing. What the fuck are these people doing.
>Study Europe >"You're so Euro-centric." >'Kay. Study something else. >"That's cultural appropriation!"
Can the SJWs just release a weekly list of what is and is not okay? I mean, geeze, not trying to be a shitlord here, but it's hard sometimes.
Benjamin Collins
I love shit like this.
Like the North American native Ghost Dances. They weren't native, they were an adoption of Christian mysticism that one evangelical native spread. It's basically a Christian-lite mass for people who don't have churches but can erect a pole. They believed it would bring peace and harmony, and then the US soldiers shot them for gathering to perform pagan war dances.
Justin Carter
Cultural appropriation and cultural exchange are two complete different things buddy. Name one instance where someone elected to take African Studies or Indigenous Studies and was called out for cultural appropriation. That is not an act of cultural appropriation, that's an act of cultural exchange because one is willing to acquire useful knowledge about a minority culture within a formalized academic setting.
Adrian Reed
>taking african studies >acquiring useful knowledge pick one. the only thing worth knowing about africa is how terribly the europeans managed its subjugation
Jaxson Jenkins
Remember, they're just as smart as you or me which is why they need preferential treatment.
History suggests Africa has changed over the years. I'm pretty the cannibals are still starving in mudhuts going on hundreds if not thousands of years now.
Isaac Nelson
How many fucking times am I going to have to spell it out. The great wall of China as we know it today was built during the Ming dynasty (1368-1644) and not almost 2000 years ago. Also if you're going to show the splendour of Persia show the Acheamid era.
Nathaniel Long
No writing, no history. It's that simple.
John Smith
Imo there's not much to talk about, Romans exploited them for slavery, greeks did, spartans did. And for the rest its just tribal warfare. African history and culture is really something for specialisation and not something to discuss in general. There isn't much to discuss. Expections as always though such as Egypt.
Anyone whining about the lack of african history should just look it up themselves and realize there isn't much to read unless you're interested in their spirituality/religion.
I think it's more a shame that we don't get taught more about the chinese dynasty's. Sounds far more interesting.
Jason Gomez
Because white people have be responsible for 100% of humanity's achievements, and so it's utterly retarded to learn about ooga booga nigger garbage.
Bentley Rivera
Were there African civilizations? I don't mean Egyptians.
Evan Roberts
>Ancient Egyptians >Not worth teaching
Lol ok user. Whatevs
Nathaniel Turner
Except none of that happened. Trans-Saharan contact was not established until well into the Islamic period.
Jose King
>implying egypt isn't part of the Mediterranean and/or levant
Michael Ortiz
>pondering to delete it

The industrial revolution, driven entirely by whites radiated from the North Sea area, is the only event in human history that ever mattered.
Jaxson Thomas
There's nothing to learn about. Why do you think Africans have to cling to European and Chinese mythology and historical figures?
Jordan Harris
We learn history in school to better relate ourselves with our country, not as a mean to be more progressive. I suppose American don't learn jack about Portuguese history or Russian history. Does that mean Americans have a disdain against those cultures/countries? Honestly, fuck off with your brainlet topic.
Kevin Perry
>radiated from the north sea area E N G L A N D And perhaps somewhere in the strait of dover for the sake of the dutch and french.
Wi wer vikings an shit.
There were some to the south of Egypt and in Ethiopia. A few in west coast Africa and along the Niger. And Mediterranean Africa has been civilized long before most of Europe had been.
Luke Clark
>E N G L A N D And the Netherlands. I'm not WUWUZ-ing here, either since I admit that my ancestors (Germany, Austria, Denmark, Scandinavia predominantly) didn't industrialize first. I also don't care about "muh Vikings" because I regard my middle age ancestors as ice niggers who ended the relatively genetically pacified Roman Empire. These groups aren't ice niggers anymore though.
Ethan Phillips
what would actually happen is propaganda and cult of personality, just like it happens in my country (we do learn about """africa""" in my country)
Jaxon Rodriguez
>Egypt >Part of Africa We make a distinction between the two for a reason.
Christian Clark
OP here. I don't spend more than 15 minutes per day on that shit, so I don't think it is too harmful to me.
I just made this thread trying to prove me wrong, because when I saw that post I felt a little enraged with the guy who posted it. I could see him posting it and thinking how deep he is to ''care'' about something we don't really need to know, or are too abstract for us (knowing that african history and culture are full of different religions and shamanism). Also, it is shameful how can a person think our white supremacist imperialist oppressor system neglected the black people history, but what about Asia, which would be much more cool to have the knowledge. Thanks for reaffirming my thoughts.
