gross

Shakespeare, Cervantes, Dante, Goethe. I prefer reading Milton or Dickens and English lit in general, but as far the definitive greats go I think that's it.

Would it be accurate to say that Toni Morrison is just as great as the likes of Dante or Goethe

zadie smith, toni morrison, jk rowling, thomas pynchon

Homer, family.

>Zadie Smith

blahhhhh

Yeah, THAT'S the one that should give you that reaction.

Bulgakov, Shakespeare, Williams, & Tolstoy

Jk Rowling is blah too, but at least people don't push her to be a literary genius

Zadie Smith on the other hand is talked about being Joyce's successor, when she is no where close

Stephen King, Kafka, Proust, Rowling

I only feel confident about saying Homer, Dostoevsky, and Tolstoy.

What's up with the complete lack of Joyce?

Joyce, Pynchon, DFW, Shakespeare

To Veeky Forums history
>Cicero, Dostoevsky, Shakespeare, Homer.
Being the most Veeky Forums,
>Joyce, Goethe, Faulkner...
>And Tolkien

Unironically can someone explain to me why Borges is held in higher esteem than Calvino. Clearly Calvino depicts a more aestheticised version of what Borges is trying to write, but I've never felt anything of Borges's writing to be as emotionally gripping/captivating as some of the stuff written by Calvino. Is it just cause I've read multiple works but Calvino (I think invisible cities is my favourite of all time) and I've only read Ficciones by Borges?

>he can't read Borges in his mother tongue
Oh, poor you. Stick to those shitty translations.

>mt. Rushmore

Asimov, Orwell, Pratchett, C.S. Lewis(in terms of approachable things which are still Veeky Forums)

If I wanted to be cool, Shakespeare, Plato, Dante and Descartes

>Wallace
>Ellis
>Chabon
>Diaz

Please don't post this retard

my personal Mt. Rushmore:
*Dostoyevsky
*Verne
*Borges
*Lem

The question of the four greatest literary giants is a different discussion of course

Pleb list
Shakespeare, Cervantes, Homer, Virgil

>tfw to smart for English list
Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Leskov, Chekhov.

Meme list
Borges, Nabokov, Joyce, Rowling

Homer
Shakespeare
Dante
Dostoevsky

Every other great writer is a derivative of one of them

the "weird" modern sense of humor owes everything to Kafka

Can I inquire why you think him a retard? I have rather enjoyed his show.

What would be the most patrician choice?

Shakespeare, Homer, Hegel and Heidegger

Shakespeare and Homer only
Nobody else is on that level

Here's the real list

Shakespeare, Joyce, Dante, Chaucer

Joyce, Tolstoy, Nabokov, Lermentov

Tolstoy
Shakespeare
Dante
Borges

Maybe swap out Kafka for Borges. Not my top 4 personal favorite authors, btw, just the "most important"

>unimpeachable-tier:
chaucer, shakespeare, cervantes, dostoyevsky.

>my favorite desu-tier
euripides, wordsworth, dostoyevsky, flann o'brien (or) joyce

>Goethe, Camões, Dante, Cervantes

Also, what is up with all the Woolf in this thread? She's great, one of my favorite writers, but she's nowhere near the big guys.

Homer
Shakespeare
Dante
Hitler

Cervantes, Unamuno, Borges, Bolaño.
Spic lit > alle

Dante
Homer
Aeschylus
Toni Morrison
