There is probably no single answer. The country is large and populated, so while the interstate system and commercial shipping allows a lot of unification, the 'states' remain as 'states' rather than a country quite often.

It is hard for a person from the 'iron range' to relate to people in northern Virginia for example. While most items can be obtained, common resources and history vary greatly.

Overall we are a democratic republic with regions often vying for individual power or prestige.
