Ayyy UChicago PhD student probably a decade older than you here

Currently starting my masters in linguistics @ McMaster University. I literally moved from South America two weeks ago and I have 0 friends in Canada. Feels lonely my man.

Anyone from an ivy wanna tell me the realities?

I feel like I have the grades and flashy ECs for one but I'm questioning myself.

I'm also considering St Johns. I just want a good education and a route to higher education

I'm still rooming with people from high school who I wasnt even friends with back then and am even less so now. I'd go on to say I actively dislike most of them. Outside of that I really only talk to coworkers, its nice because you get partnered up every night and you're forced to get to know them after a while. I'm pretty self concious of a skin condition I have so its hard to maintain a friendship because it flares up every few days and I dont leave my apartment. Cant say ive made an actual friend in my 3 years here
>What are your political views
Lean more towards the left, moreso on social issues than economic ones
>Also pretty much anything else about you would like to rant about
I'm trying to get closer to a coworker I get along particularly well with, but he's a huge pothead and I'm becoming one as well by virtue of hanging out with him more and I hate that I can see I'm becoming lazier every day. I've always had an issue with drugs and now that he's set me up with a dealer with cheap as shit prices I feel like I'm going down a bad path.

Especially a bad time because I realized one of my issues is that I dont have many hobbies (anymore) and that's a large barrier to socializing with people and basically becoming a better person. Over the past few years all my hobbies have dropped off one by one in exchange for more shitposting here

get back in the library nerd.

gt cs grad here...sad they got rid of junior's

I was accepted into a couple mid-tier ivys, but ended up going elsewhere.

English major at UCLA

Someone please be my friend. I'm a grill

Hard work and lucked out on the lottery.

Could a kind user please defend my wanting to switch my major to linguistics? I feel as if having an English degree just won't cut it these days. Linguistics looks quite appealing to me, since it's the closest that I can get to a science degree, without the difficulty that they entail.

What if I just double major?

What if I just minor in English and major in linguistics?

>Brief description of social life
I tend to keep to myself, but I find it easy to get to know people. My being a math major plays on peoples prejudice of math majors being highly intelligent, so my relationships tend to consist of people asking me for help on problems they have and not very much else.

>What are your political views
Classical Liberalism.

>Also pretty much anything else about you would [l]ike to rant about
Free will does not exist. Philosophical Idealism is horse shit (the material world exists and it is intelligible). Math is discovered and not invented. Math begets reason. Math is absolutely necessary for the understanding of the objective world. IQ is real, one dimensional, unalterable, and determined by biological factors only.

I was accepted to an Ivy without being involved in a lot of leadership roles (though I was a section leader in the band my senior year). All I did for extracurriculars was marching band, jazz band, track/field. I did have to have all As and high SAT scores to offset my non-jewish white maleness, though.

I hang out with a group of people I went to high school with and I have only a few acquaintances that I've become familiar with since I started attending the university. There's one girl I study with very often that's kind of my friend, but despite spending on average twenty hours a week alone together on top of the classes we take, we've never hung out outside of an academic setting. Pretty sure she's just using me to help her get into medical school.
>What are your political views
Not completely sure yet. I lean conservative libertarian, but I'm not dead set in much besides a Catholic viewpoint. I'm still trying to figure out the best approach to politics and the justification for it.
>Also pretty much anything else about you would like to rant about
We're rated as "The second most diverse campus in the United States and very likely the world", and the administration does not let anyone forget it. Politically, it's not too bad, but there is a sizable illegal immigrant student population that is just thrown free money while I don't get so much as a subsidized loan. Going to college in Las Vegas is not nearly exciting as you'd expect it to be, and since I graduated high school I've been to the strip maybe three or four times in total.

There's no way you still got in. You must've built some more mud huts for Africans are some shit like that.

My friend failed IR on his statistics. I thought he was smart before that. Same as you too - self described as far right.

It is quite a useless degree, don't you think?

Not for the path I have in mind, for which I'm very well prepared. The stats module was ridiculously easy, btw. Only way you could fail it is by either being extremely thick or totally indifferent.

How?
You just have to build the confidence and strength of character to say howdy or strike up a conversation about anything. If you spend enough time around someone doing the same thing they are, then they will feel obligated to acknowledge your existence and say howdy back.

Where?
In class, at the dining hall, at the math-lounge, or at the gym. Maybe the library if you're extra cunning; the problem with it is the second floor is being renovated and now no one knows where to go in order to study. It's like people are now lost.

im not sure about going to the jug but i'll probably show up anyway in a situation similar to yours. if its gets as crowded as i think it will get im totally going to bail.

Hah you're good man, I think I remember you. I'm average-height, very pale, light brown/sandy blonde hair. There's way less gingers with beards on campus tho, I'll say hi when I see you

Why would I lie? No mudhuts or other life-changing overseas experiences (these are considered cliché anyway), no legacy or upper-class wealth. I think it was a combination of reasonably original essays and being an in-state applicant that got me in.

Center left, my school is basically a tumblr meme so it makes me way more conservative.

the linguistics program that I wanted to transfer to sounded kinda funky. As far as I could tell, the degree was basically a 2 year associate degree that you focused on junior and senior year (I assume you spend the first two years picking up pre-reqs, which isn't that crazy all things considered).
What year are you? I decided to stick with English lit and I'm graduating in two semesters, but I plan on going to go to a grad school for psych. Maybe you can look into that if you're not overloaded with loans.

I like dynamics, but I'm mostly trying to make a beeline to the functional analysis course to settle a vendetta I have with that subject. I got way in over my head for a project I did as an undergraduate that would have been a lot easier had I known a bit of functional analysis.

Unfortunately Im still but an undergrad but I read too far ahead with those dumb dover books that give you enough that you can start jotting down dumb shit in notebooks that make sense to you.
I honestly love dynamic systems and probably want to pursue onwards in it maybe

>since it's the closest that I can get to a science degree, without the difficulty that they entail.

if you wanna be a good and well respected linguist you'll need to learn quite a bit of statistics, logic and even some programming knowledge wouldn't hurt.

linguistics is indeed a lot like a science degree, and that's why it's so great: it is much less infested with the kind of charlatans you'll meet in most humanities departments.

of course, with the right mindset, you can certainly become an academic fraud if you want, but i'm assuming you want to be a legit linguist publishing relevant papers on the field.

linguistics has many different fields of study: syntax, phonology, phonetics, morphology, and so on. withing these fields you have many different objects to study, ie you can focus on studying polynesian languages' syntax or you may try to work on computational models to predict and describe Inuit morphology.

I, for one, work with indigenous languages' syntax within a cognitive framework. This means I get to travel to remote hellholes and talk with aboriginal people and run tests and so on.

It is a lot of fun, but it takes a lot of work. and nobody will take your seriously outside of academia, but that's alright.

i highly recommend it.

I forgot to mention you'll end up with a huge knowledge of interesting facts about many different languages, which you'll always try to talk about with people when you're drunk, making a fool of yourself in most cases.

How is McMasters linguistics department if you were to rate it?
