If your favorite autentico osteria or obscure hole in the wall warung has started accepting credit cards, or a printed menu, it is time to find another place that serves proper food. If your favorite cha chaan teng starts offering napkins (especially if they do not charge you for them), leave immediately.
You may not have noticed it yet (although you probably have), but these are signs that the cost cutting and compromises have already begun.
What are some other telltale cues that a restaurant has lost its way? This thread is only for discriminating diners who recognize and appreciate authenticity. Morally bankrupt cowards who eat soccer mom food like Chipotle Mexican Grille [NYSE:CMG] can find another thread.

Yeah, because you either live in Hong Kong or eat nothing but American fast food.

I assume any place that doesn't take credit cards is operating a shady operation and is skirting laws. I would refuse to eat there. Also who the fuck uses cash in 2018?
Nathan Ramirez
You know businesses are charged anywhere from 3-5% of the sale total when paid for by card, right? Fur a small business that's a lot of money especially when they're already operating on a very small profit like the local bakery here.
Evan Morales
2.9% is the high end for Visa/Mastercard, most businesses will get under 2.5% based on volume. And that small percent means almost nothing if you're now getting more customers because of it.
Alexander Diaz
>when they stop employing trafficked illegals, it's time to find another place
That's how fucking stupid you sound. I'm giving you a 6/10 because on most other days I wouldn't have responded to this shitty bait.
Jaxson Hall
So acceptance of credit cards is a sign that they're CUTTING costs? Do you know how stupid you sound, you piece of shit? Don't you realized that accepting credit costs MORE money, and makes the restaurant more accessible to the affluent in the 21st century? Never post again, 0/10 thread you filthy fucking mongoloid
Xavier Ross
chipotle is good though
James Bell
Accepting cards means you lose fewer customers. There are a couple of cash-only joints near my work and I go to them maybe 2-3x a year because it's a pain in the ass to go withdraw some pieces of paper from the nearest paper-dispensery that doesn't deduct funds for having the wrong bank account, and when the meal is done you have a bunch of random bills that are useless except for tipping baristas and stuff.

a while back of the mods became enraged at my posts and started handing out draconian bans for basically anything I did no matter how trivial. it got so out of control I had to move to reddit for a while, I've only really been back for about 6 months.
here's the thing about reddit - people get pissy about it because of voting, but the fact is it's basically impossible to get a sitewide ban just by having wrong opinions. I've pissed off mods on various boards and gotten banned but you can just move to another board... I mean, sub. I've also appealed bans and gotten the bans lifted within hours. I tried appealing a 30 day "I hate you for having wrong opinions" ban here, after waiting several days of course, and the appeal was denied.

My local mexican place has menus that are legit 5+ years old. They're too cheap to replace them so they haven't raised prices.
Brody Ortiz
>doesn't deduct funds for having the wrong bank account Wait some countries still have fees for withdrawing from random atms? Lel glad I don't live in a 3rd world shitholes where you can't use your debit card anywhere without fees.
Joshua Gomez
Yeah some places advertise "$1 ATM" because that's supposed to be a good deal
But a debit card is not the same as withdrawing from an ATM, also debit cards are for poorfags here with no self control, normal people use credit cards because they're safer and we get paid 1% to 5% depending on the card and the type of transaction. This amount is subsidized by the poor people who don't use credit cards
Basically cash here is only for tipping the bathroom attendant and buying drugs unless you're like an illegal immigrant or something and even illegals now use these shitty pre-paid cards because their employers don't want to handle cash and that's how they get paid
Dominic Watson
debit cards are supposed to be a replacement for checks it's linked to your checking account in the olden days, you'd issue slips of paper promising that you had at least X amount of money waiting for you in that account
only idiots take out a fucking microloan to pay for lunch
Jordan Garcia
So you pay in advance for all your meals?
Luis Wood
In New York City lots of businesses are still cash only. And not just immigrant places in the outer boroughs. For example the Ten Bells, a pretty well regarded wine and tapas place on the LES is cash only, which is kind of weird for a place where checks easily top the hundred dollar mark. There is an ATM inside, though.
Isaac Green
And they probably get a cut from that ATM. So instead of them paying a fee to take credit cards they make a customer pay fees to eat there. So fuck that.
Austin Rodriguez
what? no, you idiot.
i get my food, consume it, and then pay for it with my own money.
Isaiah Watson
>i get my food, consume it, and then pay for it with my own money. So in other words, the restaurant owner extends you an interest-free loan. Why are you eating on credit? Why aren't you responsible, user?
Sebastian Gutierrez
True this, you should pay immediately or you're a dirtbag juden attempting to scam an hours interest off the restaurant. Pure filth in violation of all kinds of torah usury prohibitions.
Jacob Bailey
I've been to a bar that did not accept cash. I only had cash and had no idea at the time. So the bill came and I explained this, and they told me to go across the street to Walgreen's and buy a prepaid card so I could pay. I left and never came back.
Ian Murphy

Guess who the card companies make you pay for your cash back.
Hint: it's the restaurants
Jose Diaz
The restaurant is still charging me that even if I use cash so why not get it back? If they gave me a 3% cash discount then I'd consider it.
Adrian Robinson
Visa and Mastercard will turn off their card terminals if they give discounts to cash or debit customers. This kind of practice (punishment for encouraging other types of payment) is only illegal in a few countries and very much legal in the United States.
Nicholas Rogers
And I'm aware of that, it only compounds my point. If I'm paying their fees regardless I'm going to use the method that gives me money back.
Robert Campbell
hint: people spend more money when paying with card than with cash.

When a small/out-of-the-way place gets featured on the news or reviewed in a magazine, leading to an influx of people who don't give a shit about the atmosphere but want to be trendy which then always leads to price hiking and portion cutting.
Christian Wood
Not the restaurant's fault but when a local/ethnic joint is in an area that is undergoing gentrification and they have to cut quality/raise prices to stay in business
Jordan Nelson
>they have to cut quality/raise prices to stay in business Cutting quality when gentrification is happening is suicidal. Well off people are way less price sensitive, and way more quailty sensitive, than poors.
>Chipotle Chicken burrito White rice Black beans Pico Red hot Cheese Lettuce

Not if your profit margins are below 2.5 percent you're not. Gun stores operate on such a razor thing margin with new firearm sales that they have to charge people the fees if they don't want to take a loss, for instance.
Lincoln Gutierrez
That's one extreme edge case scenarios. Restaurants should have margins in the 20-40% range depending on the type.
Christian Morris
>only idiots take out a fucking microloan to pay for lunch You know you don't get interest if you pay the balance before the due date, right? And you get cash back or other rewards along with building credit.
Joseph Morales
Okay? Why the fuck do I care about the restaurant's profit margin if I'm legally getting a better deal? Businesses aren't your friend, user.
Connor Gutierrez
>Should Restaurants are the number one riskiest business venture. That 2.5 percent could be the difference between making your payment and getting foreclosed in your first year or two.

i wonder how gas stations have that "cash price/credit price", in that case?
