Gym myths

Went to to doctor, told her i had lost 6 kilos at the gym but had not been making progress for the last 2 weeks. Tells me to drop lifting and only do cardio, but "only for 40 minutes because anymore is a waste 2 hours of cardio and 40 minutes uses the same amount of calories "
This sounds unreal but as a profesional I listen to her advice is the doctor just wrong?
Also weird things and myths people tell you about exercise

she might have meant that 2 hours of walking could be about the same as 40 minutes of jogging

but, taking the quote at face value, it is completely false

doctor also said "lifting will make the muscles encapsulate fat and you wont lose weight"

I have heard at least 5 times in my life different people saying that your fat will turn to muscle so you must first become skinny then gain muscle.

Doctors don't know shit about fitness.

bro just have common sense.

40 minutes of cardio using the same amount of calories as 2 hours of cardio makes ZERO SENSE. It's complete bullshit and untrue. I don't know what that professor is a doctor of but it sure as fuck isn't anything related to biology, anatomy, or even chemistry if they're dumb enough to say some shit like that.

what common sense? we need proof. Doctor > common sense

Sometimes doctors are just full of shit m8. Especially American ones

You can't go against thermodynamic laws mate. Taking one step takes a certain amount of energy and taking a hundred takes more...

Well what energy are you using then? Are you spraying pixie dust out your ass as a propellant for the last 2 hrs?

Some people just don't know what the hell they're talking about. Plenty of Doctors got into crappy med schools, did crappily and still graduated and became doctors.

>your fat will turn to muscle so you must first become skinny then gain muscle

>your fat will turn to muscle

>so you must first become skinny then gain muscle

as fucktarded as the concept is, even if it were true the statement is even more retarded. i wish people like this would stop consciously thinking about breathing so they'd just suffocate and die.

I didn't know the law of energy conservation stopped working after 40 minutes. Brb free energy machine.

I walk at a little over 3mph for one hour cause I'm a lazy bastard: I burn about 350ish calories if I paid attentions, it's something like that
Some hard-charger comes in and runs fast all huffly puffin for 20 minutes and burns the same amount. meh. Fuck him

>I have heard at least 5 times in my life different people saying that your fat will turn to muscle so you must first become skinny then gain muscle.

I would like for you to please provide the names, addresses, and phone numbers of these 5 people so I can visit them and put them out of their pathetic miseries.

How am I supposed to trust doctors to treat diseases when they're clearly retarded?

That's why there are many specializations. Doctors know a little bit about a lot of things, but a lot only about one very specific thing. Don't trust a GP to be very knowledgeable about anythign more than common diseases.

As much as people warn you about the dangers of the internet, so long as you do a proper meta-analysis and don't get your facts from literally one online forum, the internet will forever be a more thorough and reliable source of information than a single person who has cursory knowledge of some topic. There's just no competition, unless that single person is exceptionally specialized in that topic.

is this doctor a pooinloo? For some reason Indian doctors say retarded shit about physical fitness

>tear my bicep
>get sent to family Dr because blood pressure is through the roof 190/136 during pre surgery physical
>tell Dr I have lost 20 lbs since injury
>Dr says " that's great"
>I get up, say "I'm firing you as my Dr"
>walk across hall to another Dr office

Some Dr are idiots. I've had perfect blood pressure my whole life. They don't listen, tell them to use the big cuff because my arms are big.. they don't. Tell them I just got off work and have been up for almost 72 hrs, drank 3 pots coffee over last shift, got chew in, in pain....but he couldn't figure out why my BP was so high, just wanted to give me some water pill.

Your blood pressure was 190 systolic? That's fucking high. Sure there may have been factors contributing to your high bp but you have full blown hypertension at that point. Your doc was trying to help your sorry ass by giving you some medication. Also a water pill is a diuretic and a colloquial name for a class of drug also known as anti hypertensives. It is not a pill made out of water.

The size of the cuff doesn't affect your blood pressure reading.

You dumbasses. If the cuff doesn't fit right your reading will not accurate.

It wasn't "full blown hypertension " . 12 hrs later after sleep, a proper sized cuff, no Skoal it was 118/76.
Water pill, you retard is what it commonly referred to... no shit it doesn't water.

how well a cuff fits is irrelevant unless it is so tight it comes undone and falls off or it so loose you can't squeeze the arm.

Don't listen to Doctors for exercise advice.

If you're injured, listen to them for healing that. They're trained to heal specific injuries and diseases.

This here is bullshit, I've definitely had false readings due to the cuff being too tight. They went and got a larger cuff and turns out I was fine.

Doctors go off their head, just google everything to double check. The don't care unless it's a serious health problem fitness is the same copy/pasta do this exercise/stretch/rest blahblah

So it skyrockets due to stress and drugs. Your lifestyle obviously involves stressful behaviour if you are pulling 72 hr stints and drinking 3 pots of coffee during a shift while waiting for surgery for your torn bicep. You've also lost 20lb recently indicating. Regardless of your resting bp you could probably use some medication so you don't blow something next time.

Speaking of idiot doctors...over Easter I had a relative who felt bloated, had diarrhea, etc. Went to his family doctor, the guy gave him Immodium and sent him home. The next morning at 2 o'clock he went to the ER. That doctor told him to go home, he just had an upset stomach, whatever. My relative demanded an xray and after viewing it the doctor apologized. He had a fucking tumor that had blocked up his small intestine. Twelve hours later he's gained a 10-inch incision in his abdomen and lost two feet of intestine. Another few days and something may have ruptured

tl;dr
You have to be your own advocate. Don't trust everything a doctor says if you value your health

It won't read 50 points high if it's too tight. If it's really cranked on and somehow keeps from popping the Velcro when you inflate it it will read low especially the diastolic number.

>will read slightly high

I actually wonder if there's now a program like the H1B visa just for doctors. Almost half the doctors in my area are Indian. Three relatives of mine have died under the care of an Indian doctor in the past 10 years. One from a type of bone cancer that any competent doctor would have screened for and diagnosed after she broke her hip two years before her death. Another from a heart problem that the doctor insisted was a problem with her stomach. The third I'm not entirely clear on, but he was healthy only months earlier. Granted, they were all over 70, but it still disturbs me a little. Fortunately, my GP is Korean. I think I would refuse to see an Indian doctor.

I met a fit orthopedics doctor, since I have pretty weird bones. Advice was pretty good, now I can use my arm without worrying about it getting dislocated.

>pretty weird bones.

Lmao reminds me of when i tore my pec.

Go to ER specificly state i tore my pec. Uhhhhh derrrr it is just shoulder strain....
Wtf i know i tore my pec whatever.
Go to my Regular doctor. They tell me to go see a specilist because they dont know enough about it. Go to specilist. It been about a month at this point. Have to dick around taking tests for 3 fucking months before they tell me i have tore roughly 90 percent of my pec tendon and ruptured the muscle bellies. Yeah i fucking knew jesus christ. Have high as fuck blood pressure still because i was juicing when i got injured and didnt want to fuck up my hormoes so i kept jucing while injured. Tards end up thinking there shit is broke. End up getting surgery about what 5 months after it happend because bullshit doctor stupidity

Doctors have close to zero knowledge about exercise and lifting.

Don't take advice from them when it comes to exercise.

GPs are suppose to know enough to send you to a specialist if needed. Otherwise they deal with common diseases.
Thats it.

tahts a rare case. Not the disease, but your relatives case where the doc didnt look further into it.
They probably get hundreds of patients each month with exact same symptoms. And many of them will demand the same as your relative, even though its just a common issue. And if all GPs were to send all of them to scans then they queue would be too much.

Don't do that.
Have a cheat day or maybe, two or three days.
Ramp your metabolism up.

Only specialists have worthwhile information. Your doc is probably just trying to give you whatever advice that'll minimize your chance of injury rather than what's good for your general health.

This bothers me so fucking much. My ex girlfriend is suffering from it, her GP didn't believe Lyme existed. Instead of testing for Lyme he just told her she had fibromyalgia, which is basicly a disease that is diagnosed if doctors really don't know what's wrong. 2 years later we find out she has Lyme via a doctor in Belgium. And here's the worst part: her GP saw the test results and became passive agressive as fuck. He then gave her 2 tiny prospocts about lyme and told her to google what to do now. These cunts think they know it all. Ruined her life by 2 years, got her stage 4 chronic Lyme, which may result in infertility. That'd be her only wish gone

>3 pots coffee

No wonder your BP went through the roof, drinking coffee constricts the veins

>And here's the worst part: her GP saw the test results and became passive agressive as fuck

I've heard this is standard shit. If you have the time listen to this story

thisamericanlife.org/radio-archives/episode/577/something-only-i-can-see?act=1#play

Girl diagnoses herself and her family with a genetic disease and spends pretty much her entire life trying to prove it. Every time she brings it up with a doctor or a researcher they get passive aggressive as fuck Eventually she finally does get a proper diagnosis but it wasn't in time to save her father's life from the inevitable heart issues the condition caused. She did save an olympian's life tho

it reads 160/120 for me when the doctor tries using the cuff for normal sized people and 120/80 with the wrist measurement thingy.

protip: non-native Indians are mostly here so they can say they "studied medicine in America", which is still the gold standard for medical science and education, even though the healthcare system as a whole is stupid. You're basically trusting your life to the medical equivalent of that rich kid that thought "he'd go to China because it would be useful in business".

Be 19, 9-11% bf
"Pls help gyno"
"Just bulk up, that should hide it"

Doctors generally have no clue about sports. If you want qualified advice, go to the doc the best sports teams in your areas trust.

Fucking this
Ask a doctor what's wrong with your organs, not how to lose weight

Motion is the conversion of chemical energy into movement (kinetic energy).
You need energy to move. The faster you go ,the more energy you consume. The longer you go ,the more energy you consume.

You don't stop consuming energy after moving for 40 minutes. Imagine that with your car ,if your fuel tank stopped miraculously draining after a 40 minutes drive.
What he might have said is that you may burn more calorie doing a 40 medium intensity workout instead of a 2hours low intensity workout. But you sure as hell will burn more calorie after a 2 hours medium intensity workout

What do you call the person who graduated med school at the bottom of their class?

Doctor.

My father went to the hospital because he knew he was dying.

After looking at him for 5 minutes, they sent him home with a antifungal cream. He died two days later.

To practice medicine with a foreign degree, you have to work at a practice of hospital with a certified domestic doctor overseeing your work.

>Tells me to drop lifting and only do cardio, but "only for 40 minutes because anymore is a waste 2 hours of cardio and 40 minutes uses the same amount of calories "
Your doctor is an idiot. Try saying that marathoners who have to refuel during their marathons.

Has anyone successfully sued for malpractice in a case of a physician being an idiot, instead of the usual left a sponge in?

Funny story about malpractice, if a DR uses a checklist during surgery, accidents drop by 50%. Yet some surgeons flat out refuse to use a checklist.

>ask doctor if I have lordosis
>puts me back against wall
>puts her hand between lower back and wall
>"yes you do"
>well I think there's a gap because of the size of my glutes, but what about my spine?
>"ever heard of pilates? you should do that to fix your posture"

She already knew I did weightlifting because I told her just a few minutes earlier. But still she somehow thought that waving 1lb dumbbells around would balance muscles used to moving hundreds of lbs.

>mfw I trust doctor the minimum amount possible, ie when I'm sick

When you find a great dr, stick with them. When I know something is wrong and requires an orthro dr, I end up getting on a plane & flying to the only one I trust.

Dude, while pilates might not do much, I've had physical therapists give me isolation exercises that wrecked my minor muscles with only 2lbs dumbbells.

Don't underestimate the power of properly applied low weight exercise.

>Slouching because too much press
>Start doing posterior delt isolation
God fucking damn it

To fix a lordosis, you'd have to do the following things
>strengthen abs
>strengthen hamstrings
>stretch lower back
>stretch quadriceps

Do you think I can strengthen my core and/or abs with 2lb dbs?
That would only be possible if I were a complete dyel.

Both of my parents are doctors, and they're both full of momscience shit.

>high reps low weights builds long, lean muscles
>protein powders are laced with steroids
>full ROM is bad for your joints
>low fat diet
>margarine

my core and/or hamstrings*

>20 minute miles

I was just reading an article the other day that said something similar. It was research that showed once you reach a certain point in burning calories through exercise the relationship is no longer linear and starts to tail off.

vox.com/2016/4/28/11518804/weight-loss-exercise-myth-burn-calories

That was a surprisingly good read. Isn't Vox supposed to be shitty ?

user, have you done any research into this? My gut reaction is that you'd have to burn a LOT of calories before the diminishing returns make it not worth it to exercise for calorie loss.

The only reason that it would change is if you could not maintain the same intensity. Then, yeah, of course after a certain amount of time the caloric expenditure would start to tail off...because you're slowing down. But otherwise, a certain intensity requires a specific amount of energy in order to maintain, which is easily quantifiable during cardiovascular exericse. This does not change with duration. 9 mph always requires a certain amount of energy for you to maintain, wether thats 5 minutes into your run or 2 hours.

If you aren't dyel, then obviously having a stronger core and/pr abs did nothing for you

There is probably a small muscle that has been severely under utilized, that will need to be focused on.

I agree with this.

If you are significantly overweight, your diet is way way more important. If you eat 1000 calories too much daily, then doing an hour of cardio daily will barely slow your weight gain, and definitely wont vause weight loss.

Both deficit and exercise are best, but if you are gonna pick one for weight loss, caloric deficit is the smart choice.

Tbh but even then the act of your body spraying this pixie dust out would require energy. Therefore......

That chart has no actual detail to say anything definite. LITERALLY JUNK SCIENCE.

>Tells me to drop lifting and only do cardio
Do both

> because anymore is a waste 2 hours of cardio and 40 minutes uses the same amount of calories

Total bullshit.

Run however long you want. Running longer always burns more calories.

>takes roids
>hormone levels are not at natural levels
>thinks doctors be cray for thinking their tests are broken

Do you atleast tell them you're roiding before they started testing?

>tore tricep a while ago
>go see GP
>tell him I think I tore my bicep (it was like on the edge of tricep and bicep on the inside of arm)
>tells me to describe what I feel, explain certain movements or something hitting it causes a sharp stinging pain that lasts for like 10 seconds then completely fades
>tells me to point where it is, he starts feeling it
>corrects me telling me its tricep, otherwise agrees it was a torn muscle
>told me to take it easy for 6 weeks
>took it easy for 6 weeks

>dad injured rotator cuff 20 yrs ago
>finally gets to the point he needs surgery
>gets pre op work up
>tell him he has a blockage in arteries needs to get it fixed before he has surgery
>mom looks over everything, points out it's a false positive (she ran a hospital for 20 yrs & is a nurse)
>they fight back & forth
>they refuse to approve him
>finally gets a cardiac cath.....
>no blockage at all
>ended up spending $1800 out of pocket for all the bullshit that wasn't needed

All these torn muscle stories scare me Veeky Forums. What were you doing when it happened?

I'd bet money on it being to do with people slowing down tbqh. The human body has had millions of years of evolution to increase efficiency. If it were possible to do the same amount of exercise for less energy loss, we'd do it all the time.
