They place a telescopic rod into the bone and slowly lengthen the leg. The leg bone will break and then heal longer, then break and heal longer again. It's incredibly painful, takes a long time and leaves you pretty much crippled for a year. It also has a good chance of fucking up and I would assume that even in the best cases, there would still be occasional pain.
There is no reason to ever have this surgery unless you're actually a midget. If anyone who is 5'5" or taller gets this operation, they need to see a psychiatrist.
