This is probably more due to the mean age of the study group, which was 49. It's unlikely you're going to die from any single lifestyle cause barring hard drugs. The associations were found in people with at least 1 risk factor because they're more at risk at a younger age, so the effect of plant vs animal protein is more noticeable in that population.
