There was no Ukraine until 1918. They have as much in common with the Kievan Rus and later Rurikovich states as Turkey with the Byzantine Empire. They occupy the same lands and that's it.
Ukrainians are the amerimutts of Europe. Mixture of poles, russians, tatars, turks, khazars.
Ruthenian nobles themselves polonised in order to achieve the same powers and rights as polish nobility. Exact same happened with lithuanian nobles.
Belarussians themselves are mostly happy about the Commonwealth times, even have some national holidays related to it. They're only pissed at Poland at that one time during the Peace of Riga Poland took only half of Belarus from the Soviets instead of taking all of it and subjecting them to decades of painful soviet occupation.

They spoke an East Slavic language and were Orthodox Christians. Whatever you might call them, they existed since the Kievan Rus. The Poles had a different language and a different religion. They'd rather be independent than under Polish or Russian subjugation.

It really is different, on the instinctual level. Russians are more apathetic and pessimistic. Hohol will gladly shit in your soup, while smiling to you, and than will get offended when you call him out on it.
While Russian can have some degree of conscience or self-reflection (as well as strategic planning), Hohols and Kubanoids will just dive head first into every shit and then act genuinely surprised at the consequences.

Theres almost nothing diffirent culture wise between Russia and Ukraine just that ukrainians are more culturally rural, more colourfoul and wild(not in a barbaric way), russian can somewhat easily understand ukrainian and same goes for ukrainians.
Ukraine has many of western slavic words from Poland and manny ""outdated?"""/old words that russians barely use anymore but still known and mean the same like for father is "Oтeц" and "Бaтькa" both mean the same in both russian and ukrainian, but ukrainians use the later as official.
It can be considered as seperate language and should in my opinion, but it's more like if Hampshire majority still spoke Middle English influence by french instead of modern english, and called it a seperate language and seperate culture/ethnicity.
Most of Belorussians/Ukrainian/Russians consider themselves as brother nations but small majority of ukranians have giant hate boner again Moskals(russians) to the point of saying they are seperate from slavs themselves due to tatar linguistic words, forgetting that ukrainian itself has manny tatar words...
