There was no Ukraine until 1918. They have as much in common with the Kievan Rus and later Rurikovich states as Turkey with the Byzantine Empire. They occupy the same lands and that's it.
Ukrainians are the amerimutts of Europe. Mixture of poles, russians, tatars, turks, khazars.
Ruthenian nobles themselves polonised in order to achieve the same powers and rights as polish nobility. Exact same happened with lithuanian nobles.
Belarussians themselves are mostly happy about the Commonwealth times, even have some national holidays related to it. They're only pissed at Poland at that one time during the Peace of Riga Poland took only half of Belarus from the Soviets instead of taking all of it and subjecting them to decades of painful soviet occupation.

They spoke an East Slavic language and were Orthodox Christians. Whatever you might call them, they existed since the Kievan Rus. The Poles had a different language and a different religion. They'd rather be independent than under Polish or Russian subjugation.

Literally the only Ukrainian ally ever was Czechoslovakia in 1919 because our and Polish autistic politicians ruined relations between us two and Czechoslovakia wanted to create oil reserves as fast as possible so we traded weapons for oil.
