Bragging thread

Post your unis and what course you're doing.

i don't know yet, probably Brown.

Are u a nigger?

affirmative action.jpg

no, fuck off

>ubc
>math

you must not be smart enough to see how a smart person utilizes bragging towards success

You could say he's
Brown

>there are no scholarships exclusively for white people
aw man, sucks being white :-(

Go fuck yourself

why the hostility?

Going to an ivy is dumb unless you are getting a big scholarship. You aren't going to get into their secret meme clubs as an average Joe anyways, you'll just spend 40k a year more for the same job opportunities as someone who did well in a state school.
That said MIT looks cool as fuck.

>MIT
>An ivy

Praise mr goose!

Mechanical Engineering (Werktuigbouwkunde) at the TU Delft
It's widely considered to be one of the most difficult courses in the Netherlands

>It's widely considered
kek nice ego you got there

Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA)
math

Most of the kids who go to Yale graduate debt free simply because they give out so much money. You factor in the AVERAGE 44k they hand out, in addition to the plethora of scholarships a kid going to an Ivy league school has definitely won and federal grants and they are probably getting PAID to go to these schools.

UCB
Molecular cell biology

Why the shit is UCLA up there with Harvard, MIT, etc? lmao

>go to no name uni
>first maths lessons are number lines and fractions
>still accredited
>still will get job
>will have time to get laid more than you

TUM - Technical University of Munich (or TUMbler Uni) - CS Meme

Good luck getting real research bro.

I go to UChicago and I hate coursework

Does anyone want to be buds

Proles from California seem to believe UCLA is an Ivy-tier school because it's a research powerhouse

t.UCLA chemistry student

CS.

It's CS.

That's why Cornell is there, and Yale isn't.

UCLA has a good CS program? I thought even UCSD's was better. And where's Berkeley?

>UCLA is an Ivy-tier school
It probably beats some of the shittier ivies in various science/math departments

Premed?

>always wanted to go to cornell
>senpai went through some shit
>got depressed
>fucked up senior year, went to cc and got bad grades for 2 years
>gpa 2.77 with a bunch of Ws
>got my shit together, transcript looks like a different student
>straight As 18 science credits
Do I have a chance to transfer? I'm 99% sure I dont

what field?

CS/Math

Computer Systems Engineering. 3rd year

CWRU (Case Western Reserve University)
Studying physics, doing really cool research right now.

...

Do you feel safe in Chicago?

stand aside you cretinous peasants

Columbia University

How is the location/faculty/etc ? Considering applying for a PhD there

Not him, but I went to Illinois Tech downtown (I'd say the neighborhood is worse)
We have campus security and chicago pd patrols every night.
There's still stories you hear every once in a while.

Just don't be stupid and you're normally fine. Stay in groups, don't have your phone out, pay attention to your surroundings, go down lit main streets, don't go north of campus, etc

AMA

1st year chemboii here.

How can you fucking live like that? That sounds terrible.
Also how can you take living in Illinois at all? Can't own guns, the police are corrupt...

It's such a change... For me, living in a huge Canadian city that has almost no crime and under 5 homicides a year. I can't imagine not being able to just go out at night alone when I want.

What do you study, at what level, and how did you get in? Is the area you live in nice? What's the cost of living there? Is it safe to be out and about during the day and go see stuff downtown or around the city?

Jagiellonian University in Poland
Med school

the location and faculty are great (they know their shit).

it's very much a do it yourself uni though and you will get pressured into performing.

Lol, no it's not, I'm gonna do my master at the TU delft.
Mech. eng. is the most average difficulty over there.
(Je zit boven TB IO en de rest van de architectuur studies, je zit onder aerospace eng. EE, TN, en alle wiskunde studies)

Last year before I start my PhD, taking Arithmetical Geometry.

you got any advice on personal statement? applying for physics, no clue what to write for it.

Swarthmore College

Math and Physics

I suspect the interviewers didn't even read mine, when I mentioned one of the points he replied "oh did you?" flicked 3 pages forwards in his stack of notes and flicked right back to the front again.

That being said, do put some effort into it as it could be a determining factor as to if you get an interview. The way I did it was I wrote a huge essay talking about the subject, my hobbies, work experience and any other interesting stuff I could think of at the time. It ended up being twice the max length as required, but then when I took it to teachers I could easily edit parts. Talking of teachers, the best advice I can give you, is to find teachers you like and trust and ask them to read and give you suggestions. Use their suggestions first and everyone else's suggestions should be for minor grammar/sentence structure adjustments. Good luck, which college you want to apply to.

yea book, which college? I'm at Trinity

Physics fresher here
Just write your history in the subject and shill it
I found a template and used a thesaurus

not him but im starting maths there in october

1. write the ps for the other unis. oxford dont use ps's as much as other unis who dont have interviews/tests and also you need to be realistic - physics at oxford is very competitive.

2. read about 6 physics/maths related books. mention 4 in passing and 2 in detail. try to mix perhaps a few serious book with a few meme-tier pop-sci books. try to make one rather obscure/specialist - so perhaps physics of meteorology instead of quantum mechanics.

3. if you've done maths competions (ukmt, senior maths test, bmo) put that in

4. say why you want to do physics. talk briefly (BRIEFLY!) about non-academic interests and try to link them to physics/academic. e.g. i play chess, because i enjoy competition and finding the optimal way to solve a problem. i play the viola which helps keep my brain engaged even when im relaxing. etc

3. if you write the word passionately then legitimately murder your family.

4. (im assuming your uk) explain why you chose your a levels and if you've read outside the curriculum (only for physics-related topics).

5. write eloquently. get your subject teacher to check it.

6. if you get an interview. make sure that you can talk about everything that you mention for at least 5 minutes straight before running dry. they might not even ask you anything (my maths interview didnt) but if they do and you cant answer then your fucked.

6. dont worry about the ps. just focus on the PAT. for maths a single mark on the MAT (/100) is equivalent to a full A* GSCE, i assume its the same for the PAT.

do every single PAT past paper/spec you can find. repeat them multiple times if necessary until you get 90+. make an edexcel spreadsheet recording your scores. srsly fäm PAT is super important.

7. avoid cliches especially the avoiding-cliches cliche.

>Thomas Edison State University
>Air Traffic Control

Already graduated Fort Rucker's ATC program.

just started undergrad here in math

I will apply for my masters in two years

Just started? How was it applying? What did they look for, and what did they see in you?

Rather than one long, broad essay, the application consists of several short, specific prompts that allow you to expand on experiences that are ultimately more relevant, in my opinion. The interview process is relatively casual, too. It was more conversational than I was expecting, which just goes to show how genuine the application process is here in general compared to other places.

From what I've gathered, they're looking for people with solid academic records who are passionate/curious about STEM.

Just graduated. Barely scraped through.

>they're looking for people with solid academic records who are passionate/curious about STEM.
Cheers, Geoff

first year electrical/computer engineering

Brainlet, can't even get into grad school here, let alone anywhere reputable. Electrical engineering

Just graduated. Computer science.

Are you looking to switch into Engineering, or stay in Math?

Do you frequent The Den?

What course? I'm starting on Monday.

What course are you in?

math

is that ms paint?

Electrical Engineering

Did my undergrad at an Ivy-- studied computer science with a focus on software systems and distributed computing. Currently a graduate at Columbia, focusing on theoretical computer science and cryptography-related topics.

yeah I'm minoring in MS Paint

I'm transferring here for Math this coming summer; they have a surprisingly strong program.

MSc Financial Risk Management.

What will you be studying?

I did undergrad at Birmingham. The step up was massive. I sat a few undergrad modules at UCL and what undergrads study there compared to what I did at undergrad is a so far apart. Its not a surprise that a lot of places are only interested in recruiting from top unis.

I didnt particularly enjoy the feel of the university. For me, the campus atmosphere at Birmingham was far more relaxed and enjoyable. But you have so many options open to you at UCL which you wouldnt elsewhere so its worthwhile.

>small state school in New Jersey
>chemistry (premed)

I just came here cause it's a mile away from my house and cost free with my scholarship. At least it's not hard to find research opportunities here.

2nd year molecular physics

I am starting an MSci in Maths.
I hope the work load is worth it.

If you do well, you'll have great opportunities for internships and job prospects. Plus London is amazing. I was there this week for an interview, and it really blows away any other city in the UK.

lol no they dont

Do the extemption of tuition fees apply for foreign low income students too?
I'm thinking about applying for Brown.

which oxbridge college did you get rejected from senpai?

Cambridge master race coming through
doing genetics phd, did my undergrad here as well

I know, its just a lie I tell myself to keep from killing myself.

Princeton hmu if you go here

University of technology in Graz, Austria.

Seems like a quite well respected university but i don't really know about that.

2nd year Physics starts monday

>his university is younger than 900 years

>does a science course
>at oxford
top kek

>tfw to smart to go to university

which semester?

Mechanical Engineering
TU Delft

Nottingham

Genetics

Pics of Brady with keyboard on head, or you're a liar

Same school and major. Which dorm?

Sitting for the agrégation, fucking regretting not having gone for the msc

Shit school full of perverts and autists. I started my PhD last week.

Just ended undergrad a pic related. That school could actually use few more perverts and autists

Not the best Uni by any means, but they threw a lot of money at my subject recently putting it 19th place on some list. They're pretty good for getting jobs.

I'm a lawfag, by the way.

Ditto, second year physics
>tfw you get a free textbook that covers everything you study in first year

Literally never seen him walking around

No, it's that minorities have to achieve incredibly less in order to attend prestigious schools (except Asians, they have it even worse).

No only is that bullshit, it also means that White and Asian students often have suspicions that their nonwhite colleagues are not qualified to be with them, sometimes rightly so.

Are the research opportunities really as good as they say they are there? I've heard u can do it as a freshman. Also major?

Pre-career achievement is largely relative. Xinhao who won the math Olympiad after years of coaching from his parents and tutors has achieved something less impressive than Jamal who did it on his own while helping his single mom raise his multiple half-siblings.

There's a huge difference between Chicago (Cook County) and the rest of Illinois. I currently live in the nice north suburbs of Chicago. We pay about 1600 per month for rent

I walked around campus a lot late at night as I'd spend most of my time in the lab. When I was a Freshman, I was wary of wandering alone, but by Senior year, I felt fine. The one person I know who was robbed, was antisocial and went out of his way to avoid some of the crowded streets around the Sox stadium (our campus is on the opposite side of the expressway).

I got my BS in Mechanical Engineering there and started my graduate degree there, but had to leave for reasons. I got in by applying to a bunch of schools and it was the only one that accepted me and gave me a scholarship.

The touristy parts of Chicago are completely safe during the day, the red line is crowded late at night (I've ridden it packed at 2am and it runs all night). I've been to some of the run down areas with no problems. You just kinda get use to it I guess.

The funny part is I went to grad school at UT knoxville and actually felt unsafe. In the semester I was there every "rape" was reported via email, we were informed not to go near one of the dorms as someone was seen to be carrying a gun, I was shouted at from a car twice, and told to step off while riding my bike back home.
