God, Knuth is annoying. You know, he never saw the point of Latex, he thought everyone was going to just work in plain Tex, which pretty much nobody saw as worthwhile.

He represents one of the worst qualities of academics: technically proficient, but whimsical in his applications of that skill to the point of near uselessness.

Personally, I think even Latex was a mistake. As we move to the computer, rather than developing ways to print prettier forms of blackboard shorthand, which are optimized for terseness and tend to be incomprehensible for anyone not deep in the context of the specific work being done, we should be learning to work in representations that are suitable for manipulation on the computer.
